Independent presidential candidate Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe has announced that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has endorsed his economic program.
Addressing a public rally at the Horana Public Stadium on September 15, Wickremesinghe received a warm reception from attendees. During his speech, he asserted, “We must proceed with this IMF program. It is our only support option. We have secured $3 billion from the IMF, which is being held. Additionally, we have backing from 18 countries. By merely paying the interest, we stand to benefit $10 billion. We cannot afford to abandon this program. We need to build an export economy in this country.”
Wickremesinghe emphasized that his program had been accepted by the IMF, while casting doubt on the proposals of other candidates. “They are merely talking about the IMF. The IMF reviewed all the election manifestos and determined what actions are necessary, which is what I am implementing. Other candidates do not have IMF support. Our program is the one endorsed. Your future depends on this. On September 21, support our program and grant us the mandate,” he urged.
In a separate rally in Ratnapura, aimed at promoting his “Powerful Sri Lanka” vision, Wickremesinghe criticized his rivals. “Where were these 38 people two years ago? They were absent. Sajith Premadasa distanced himself, and Anura could not be found. Now, they are concerned about the current situation. Were they not aware of the gas and petrol shortages back then? It was a severe issue. President Premadasa established 200 garment factories to safeguard a party. Sajith Premadasa has betrayed his father’s vision and formed a new party with Nalaka Godaheva. Vote for Sajith Piris from now on,” he stated.
Wickremesinghe’s remarks underscore his confidence in his economic plan and his criticism of his opponents’ credibility and actions.
