Colombo, Sri Lanka – In a significant statement made at the Narahenpita Abhayarama Viharaya, Venerable Dodampahala Rahula Thero revealed that Namal Rajapaksa, son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, has reportedly requested his father to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. The Thero mentioned that Namal urged his father to support President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the upcoming election, signaling a potential shift in the political landscape.
The Thero’s remarks came during a public meeting at the temple, where he expressed his thoughts on the importance of unity for the country’s future. He cautioned against division and stressed the need for careful consideration of the consequences of political alliances.
A Call for National Unity
In a heartfelt address, the Venerable Thero appealed to political leaders to prioritize the welfare of the country over personal ambitions. “Oh, our sons, sirs, if the favors you offer, whether casually or intentionally, go against Ranil sir, the common religion, security, and language of this country will be at stake. You should think twice or three times before making any decisions,” he said.
The Thero emphasized the pivotal role that Mahinda Rajapaksa played in the country’s victory in 2009, which brought an end to the civil war. He noted that Mahinda’s legacy still holds weight among the people, and it is crucial to make decisions that serve the nation’s best interests.
“Mahinda sir, who took the victory of our country in 2009 and became a refuge for the people, now stands at a critical moment. It is time to make the right choice and support the nation by aligning with the current leadership,” the Thero urged, indicating that combining forces with Wickremesinghe would be a strategic move.
Namal Rajapaksa’s Role in the Decision
Addressing Namal Rajapaksa directly, the Venerable Thero encouraged the young politician to step aside for the greater good. “If you are a true leader, a patriot, and if you truly love this country, then this is the moment to act. Leave now, support the current leadership, and secure the future,” he advised.
The Thero also reassured Namal that opportunities would arise for him in the future. “Namal son, the right opportunity will come for you. When it does, the support of your friends, like Rahul, will be there. You must continue to build for that future,” he added, referring to the possibility of Namal taking on a leadership role at a later stage.
A Strategic Shift for the Rajapaksas?
This potential endorsement of Ranil Wickremesinghe by the Rajapaksa family could mark a strategic realignment within Sri Lankan politics. With Mahinda Rajapaksa’s enduring influence and Namal’s growing political profile, their support could prove critical in shaping the outcome of the presidential election.
However, such a move would likely come as a surprise to the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) base, which has traditionally rallied around the Rajapaksas. As the election draws nearer, all eyes will be on how these political dynamics unfold and whether the Rajapaksa family will indeed throw its weight behind the incumbent president.
The Venerable Thero’s words have sparked discussions about the future of the country’s leadership and the potential for unity among key political figures during a crucial election year.
