Independent presidential candidate Ranil Wickramasinghe has extended an invitation to members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) to join forces in rebuilding the country. Speaking at a public rally in Kuliapitiya on September 17, Wickramasinghe urged unity among various political factions to address the nation’s challenges.
Wickramasinghe reflected on his past experiences, mentioning the fear he felt in May 2022 and the subsequent reluctance to speak out even after assuming the presidency. “I have spoken to those from the United National Party, the Pohottuwa, and the SLFP. I remember the fear I felt back then, and even now, there are uncertainties about whom to support. Let us work together for our victory on September 21,” he stated.
Additionally, another “Ranil Can” rally was held in Mannar, aimed at solidifying support for Wickramasinghe’s independent presidential bid. During the event, Wickramasinghe addressed the crowd by highlighting the promises of his campaign. “They were not present when you needed them, but now they come asking for your support. Next year, I pledge to lighten the burden of life even more. Grant me the mandate to achieve this,” he asserted.
Wickramasinghe’s calls for unity and his campaign promises are central to his efforts as he seeks to gain broader support ahead of the upcoming election.
