COLOMBO (September 18, 2024) — More than Rs 2 billion have been spent on securing buses for the final public rallies of this year’s presidential election, according to the President of the Ceylon Private Bus Owners’ Association, Gemunu Wijeratne. The association has recorded a profit of nearly Rs 1 billion rupees from the provision of buses during this election season.
In the lead-up to the final day of campaigning, each political party and group has requested approximately 1,500 buses for today’s (18) public rallies. The largest number of buses was reportedly secured by the National People’s Force.
Furthermore, around 500 buses have been allocated for election duties across the country, ensuring transportation support for electoral operations.
Mr. Wijeratne added that about 50% of the bus fleet will remain in operation on the 20th of September. However, there is expected to be a significant shortage of long-distance service buses on Election Day, September 21, with only 10% to 15% of buses expected to be available.
