Sagara Kariyawasam, General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), announced that former minister Basil Rajapaksa will return to Sri Lanka shortly to spearhead the party’s general election campaign.
Kariyawasam made this statement in response to inquiries regarding Basil Rajapaksa’s departure earlier in the day, just before the presidential election. He clarified that Basil had been scheduled to travel abroad for medical tests weeks ago but delayed his trip to focus on the election campaign for Namal Rajapaksa, the party’s presidential candidate.
“Despite his medical needs, Basil Rajapaksa worked tirelessly until the last moment for the party. After completing his medical tests abroad, he will return to lead the general election preparations,” said Kariyawasam.
He also dismissed rumors circulating on social media about Namal Rajapaksa’s children traveling abroad with relatives. Kariyawasam confirmed that Namal had participated in religious activities at Kataragama Kiri Vehere with his family earlier in the day.
