Colombo, Sri Lanka – Prof. Arjuna de Silva, the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency (SLADA), has announced his resignation, effective September 30, 2024. He made the announcement during a press conference held at SLADA’s headquarters in Colombo.
Prof. de Silva, who has held the position since 2011, emphasized that his decision to step down was personal and not influenced by any external pressure. “I am leaving with great satisfaction, knowing that I have done my part in the fight against doping in Sri Lanka, and now it’s time for someone else to take up the role,” he said.
Throughout his 13-year tenure, Prof. de Silva has worked under three Presidents and eight Sports Ministers, making significant strides in combating the use of performance-enhancing drugs among athletes. Under his leadership, Sri Lanka moved to sixth place among Asian countries in controlling doping. He also oversaw the construction of SLADA’s new headquarters in Colombo and played a key role in identifying and regulating banned substance importers and retailers.
Prof. de Silva expressed pride in SLADA’s achievements, especially in reducing the prevalence of drugs among athletes in Sri Lanka. He also highlighted the growing recognition of SLADA on the international stage, noting that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has chosen Sri Lanka Cricket for doping control services at all ICC tournaments hosted in the country, which could provide significant future income for Sri Lanka Cricket.
Meanwhile in 2021, Prof. Arjuna De Silva, despite being the chairman of the country’s anti doping agency was also appointed to head the 5-member ‘Interim’ committee of Sri Lanka Cricket Board. Many found that decision and appointment to be a huge conflict of interest, as he continued to hold both posts.
As he steps down from his role, Prof. de Silva leaves behind a legacy of reform and progress in anti-doping efforts, with Sri Lanka poised to continue making strides in the fight against doping in sports.
