Colombo, September 21 – Foreign Minister Ali Sabry expressed pride in being part of President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s team, regardless of the outcome of today’s presidential election.
In a message posted on X, Sabry praised the president’s leadership during Sri Lanka’s unprecedented economic crisis, recalling the dire situation the country faced two years ago. He noted how people were leaving in large numbers, while fuel, gas, and basic necessities were in short supply. Inflation had spiraled, and essential resources like fertilizer and medicine were scarce.
“Fast forward two years, and the transformation is undeniable. Stability has returned, the rupee has strengthened, and inflation is now firmly under control,” Sabry stated. He highlighted the government’s reforms, which have significantly increased revenues and boosted reserves, as well as the crucial debt restructuring that brought Sri Lanka a $17 billion advantage.
Sabry added that staying committed to fiscal discipline could guide Sri Lanka toward sustainable growth, noting that while it’s easy to criticize from the sidelines, the real courage lies in tackling the country’s challenges head-on.
“Looking back, I’m proud that we answered the call when our country needed us most and gave everything we had to help rebuild our nation,” Sabry concluded, expressing hope and optimism for the future.
