Colombo, September 21 – Former President Maithripala Sirisena announced today, after casting his vote in Polonnaruwa, that he will support whoever is elected in the 2024 Presidential election.
Addressing the media, Sirisena highlighted the significant financial challenges facing the next president, noting that the government will need to spend at least Rs. 40 billion on upcoming elections. He pointed out that the current election alone has cost more than Rs. 10 billion, with additional expenses for Provincial Council and Pradeshiya Sabha elections expected to exceed another Rs. 10 billion.
He expressed concern about the challenges awaiting the incoming leader, particularly in managing the economy and providing services amidst such financial pressures.
Sirisena also clarified his political future, stating, “I have not retired from politics but have not decided whether to contest in future Presidential or parliamentary elections.”
