Sunil Handunnetthi, a National Executive Member of the National People’s Force, announced that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake intends to abolish the executive presidential system as one of his government’s top priorities. Handunnetthi, speaking to the media in Colombo, declared that the newly elected president would be the last executive president of Sri Lanka, setting the stage for a significant overhaul of the country’s political structure.
“Today, you have appointed the last executive president of this country. There will be no more executive presidents,” Handunnetthi affirmed, calling for public support to realize this change.
In addition to this, Handunnetthi stated that the government would cut back on privileges granted to politicians. He stressed that this reduction in political perks was a critical promise of the new administration and would be acted upon swiftly to help restore public trust in governance.
The move signals a broader push by the Dissanayake-led government toward accountability, transparency, and democratic reforms, aiming to transform Sri Lanka’s political culture.
