Colombo, September 24 — A new “Renaissance” cabinet will be sworn in today, according to MP Vijitha Herath of the National People’s Force (NPP). This temporary cabinet, seen as a transitional government, will remain in place until the next general election, after which a newly elected administration will take over.
Herath confirmed that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has called for a crucial discussion following the swearing-in ceremony to address the next steps, including the likely dissolution of the current parliament.
“The temporary cabinet will steer the country through this transition, ensuring governance continues smoothly until a fresh mandate is obtained from the people,” Herath stated.
With a growing push for political change, many members of the existing 225-member parliament may soon find themselves back home, waiting for a new general election. The move comes amid increasing public dissatisfaction with the current political climate, signaling that sweeping reforms could be on the horizon.
This transitional cabinet is expected to focus on stabilizing the economy and preparing for the next election, all while navigating the complex challenges left by the previous administration.
