Colombo, September 24 — Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe will not contest the upcoming parliamentary elections, according to United National Party (UNP) Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene. Speaking at a press conference held in Colombo, Wijewardene confirmed that Wickremesinghe has no intention of seeking a seat in Parliament, either through direct elections or the national list.
After decades of political service, including his tenure as Prime Minister and President, Wickremesinghe appears to be stepping away from electoral politics, marking the end of a long and impactful career in Sri Lanka’s parliamentary landscape.
“Mr. Wickremesinghe has completed his parliamentary journey and will not be returning as a candidate,” said Wijewardene, signaling a potential shift in leadership for the UNP.
This decision comes as Sri Lanka prepares for a new election cycle, and the country faces pressing challenges. Wickremesinghe’s departure from active politics marks the end of an era, as the UNP looks ahead to chart a new course under fresh leadership.
