In a major revelation, National People’s Power (NPP) executive member Wasantha Samarasinghe has brought to light the misuse of government vehicles belonging to the Presidential Secretariat. Addressing the media, Samarasinghe claimed that 253 vehicles registered under the Secretariat have been used for activities outside their official duties, with 29 vehicles still missing.
He revealed that the Presidential Secretariat currently has 830 vehicles registered under its name. However, since President Anura Dissanayake took office, numerous vehicles have been abandoned or left in public places. Some were reportedly found parked in front of locations such as Galle Mudora Pitiya, the Foundation Institute, and Laksala, raising concerns about a lack of proper oversight.
Samarasinghe assured the public that a formal investigation is in the works. He promised that the inquiry would uncover who had access to these vehicles and who was responsible for their improper use. “We will reveal the names of those involved to the country once the investigation is complete,” he stated.
The media briefing was held after Samarasinghe arrived at Galumuvadora, a location where several abandoned government vehicles were discovered. The incident has triggered calls for greater transparency and accountability within the government.
The public awaits further developments as authorities intensify their efforts to address the misuse and recover the missing vehicles.
