Presidential candidate Dilith Jayaweera came under heavy criticism on social media after comments he made about the newly appointed Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, from the National People’s Power, were shared online in an edited clip. The video quickly went viral, leading to a wave of backlash on several social media platforms.
Many accused Jayaweera of being out of touch and perpetuating outdated gender norms with his remarks. The controversy has deepened the existing divide in Sri Lanka’s political landscape, raising issues around gender, identity, and modernization in the country’s evolving discourse.
Jayaweera criticized Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya by implying she represents a small, English-speaking minority disconnected from traditional Sri Lankan values. He argued that her westernized mindset and approach distinguish her from what he considers a “traditional Sri Lankan woman,” pointing out her differing views on conventional family structures. While Jayaweera highlighted the cultural divide between developed and developing nations, especially regarding family values, many viewers overlooked this nuance and instead reacted strongly, sparking widespread criticism.
Many eyebrows were raised, with some wondering if Jayaweera was subtly hinting at Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya’s association with the country’s so called minority LGBTQI community.
“Where is the full video? Someone has simply edited the interview and taken just this portion and shared it on social media simply to create mischief. If anyone watches the full video, especially what is discussed before and after, then it paints a different picture altogether” stated a commentator on social media.
“Prime Minister Amarasuriya leading upto the the Presidential Elections had earlier expressed her support towards women especially those that are involved in in the trade of prostitution and also NPP’s overall support extended towards the LQBTQI community.” he further stated.
A similar incident took place sometime earlier when Jayaweera addressing a gathering had spoken about Lord Buddha. In that speech Jayaweera speaking in the vernacular stated “soosthiyak gahala aarthal ekak ganne ethi” when translated to English he meant that perhaps Prince Siddartha may have have also smoked cannabis and enjoyed much worldly pleasures as a prince, prior to giving up his riches and opting to go on his sacred and holy journey.
