It has been reported that many former members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), who supported former President Ranil Wickramasinghe in the last presidential election, have opted out of contesting the upcoming parliamentary elections. This decision comes in the wake of their candidate’s defeat and the insufficient vote count in the previous election.
Additionally, Wickramasinghe’s move to reorganize and run under the United National Party (UNP) for the next general election has further influenced their choice. SLPP leaders have made it clear that they are unwilling to welcome back those who defected during the presidential race.
For these ex-SLPP members, the possibility of aligning with an alliance led by Dinesh Gunawardena appears bleak, as they believe such a coalition has little chance of significant success. As a result, many former senior and junior members of SLPP have decided to step away from electoral politics altogether.
