Colombo, Sri Lanka – The Kollupitiya Police have informed the Fort Magistrate’s Court that they are investigating allegations involving the use of a company vehicle in the campaign activities of MP Namal Rajapaksa. The report, submitted to Magistrate Tanuja Lakmali on the 27th, indicates that a vehicle belonging to the welfare department of Lanka Electricity Pvt. Company was allegedly used for campaign purposes during a rally in Anuradhapura.
According to the police, the vehicle’s driver reportedly took leave after stating he had personal matters to attend to at his home in Horowpathana. However, the driver allegedly used the vehicle for Mr. Rajapaksa’s rally on August 21st. This complaint was initially raised by the Election Commission, prompting an official investigation.
Magistrate Lakmali granted permission to the Kollupitiya police to obtain the phone records of the driver as part of their investigation. The vehicle in question, a Montero jeep, was reportedly scheduled for maintenance at the time.
The investigation continues as the police gather evidence regarding the potential misuse of company resources during election-related activities.
