KURUNEGALA, Sept. 30, 2024 — In a show of solidarity and optimism following the election of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, residents of the Kurunegala district organized a community cleanup initiative. The event took place on Saturday, September 29, and involved the cleaning of roads, cemeteries, playgrounds, and lakes in various locations across the region, including Walbi.
Participants expressed that this collective effort symbolized the need for societal transformation, reflecting the vision of the newly elected president. Citizens from various walks of life—including government officials, businesspeople, and other professionals—joined the activity, setting aside party affiliations to work toward a cleaner environment.
Mr. Lineal Patabandi, a lawyer involved in the event, emphasized that such community-driven initiatives highlight the importance of local leadership and unity. Rather than relying on paid labor from the local council, participants volunteered their time and energy, demonstrating the power of collective action.
Notable figures, including Mr. Namal Karunaratne, leader of the All Ceylon Farmers Federation, and Mr. Dharmapriya Dissanayake, a former member of the Kurunegala local council, inspected the cleanup efforts and praised the community’s commitment.
The cleanup was seen as not just an environmental effort, but a symbolic gesture toward the societal change envisioned under President Dissanayake’s leadership.
