Colombo – The newly appointed government has decided to suspend the previous administration’s plan to sell a majority stake in SriLankan Airlines. The airline had been slated for sale under the State Enterprise Restructuring Unit, but the current government, led by the National People’s Power (NPP), has chosen to retain the airline under state control.
The NPP government believes that SriLankan Airlines can play a significant role in promoting the country’s tourism industry, which is vital to the national economy. Anil Jayantha, chairman of the NPP’s economic council, stated that rather than selling the airline, the focus will be on improving the efficiency of its management.
This move reflects the government’s broader strategy to maintain control over key state assets while seeking ways to make them more financially viable, particularly in sectors that can contribute to the nation’s growth, such as tourism.
