K.D. Lal Kantha, a senior National Executive Member of the National People’s Force (NPP), recently called for a shift in how the public addresses President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. In a statement made during a discussion with a national newspaper, Lal Kantha emphasized that even though Dissanayake now holds the highest office in the country, he should be referred to more simply and humbly.
Lal Kantha stated, “He is Comrade Anura Kumara Dissanayake, leader of the NPP, and now, President of this country. It would be appropriate for people to call him President Anura Dissanayake, without the need for grand titles such as ‘His Excellency’ or ‘Most Honorable.'” This sentiment reflects the values of the NPP, which seeks to foster a political culture where leaders are seen as servants of the people rather than figures requiring excessive formality.
He further highlighted that President Dissanayake, who has long been associated with the struggles of ordinary citizens, does not need titles that elevate him above the people. Instead, the focus should be on his role as a leader who remains accessible and relatable to the public.
This call for simplicity aligns with the NPP’s broader vision of a people-centered governance model, where leaders work alongside citizens rather than being placed on a pedestal. The NPP, led by Dissanayake, has consistently advocated for reforms aimed at reducing the gap between the government and the people, promoting equality, and ensuring that those in power remain accountable to the electorate.
The move is seen as part of a broader effort to reshape Sri Lankan political culture and bring it closer to the values of humility and service that the NPP upholds.
