Former Parliamentarian Wasantha Yapabandara has strongly criticized any potential alliance between the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and the United National Party (UNP), likening it to the SJB “cutting its own neck.” Yapabandara made these remarks during a press conference held in Kandy, where he voiced concerns over a possible coalition between the two parties.
He emphasized that the SJB, a political force that has gained significant support, would be undermining its own credibility by aligning with what he called the “smuggling gang” of the UNP. According to Yapabandara, the UNP leadership is attempting to join forces with the SJB as part of a broader agenda to benefit from the latter’s growing influence, particularly in the face of recent political challenges.
Yapabandara warned that this move would be detrimental to the SJB, accusing the UNP of harboring corrupt elements that are looking to exploit the SJB’s political umbrella for their own gain. He accused the UNP of trying to “cut the throat” of the SJB by encroaching into its political sphere, while also criticizing the UNP for its history of obtaining privileges from the government, including licenses for businesses and luxury perks.
Furthermore, he likened Ranil Wickremesinghe’s role in the UNP to that of a leaderless entity, describing the party as one that remains with just a “trunk and stomach,” without direction or leadership. Yapabandara concluded by emphasizing that the SJB must remain a strong, independent political force and should not give in to external pressures from corrupt factions.
He also highlighted the need for the SJB to focus on bringing forward young, educated, and uncorrupted leaders in the next election, distancing itself from the politics of old, corrupt regimes.
In his sharp remarks, Yapabandara indirectly referenced the ongoing political narrative promoted by the National People’s Power (NPP) regarding the ruling class, which he accused of profiting from illegal taxes on essential goods like petrol. He called for decisive leadership within the SJB to prevent any alliances that would tarnish the party’s integrity.
