Dilith Jayaweera, leader of the Mawbima Janata Party, emphasized the importance of allowing the new government to prove itself, declaring that his party is prepared to function as a constructive opposition. He made these remarks during a press conference held at the Mawbima Janata Party headquarters in Colombo on October 2.
Jayaweera stated, “As people who do good politics, we have a duty to give the current government a chance. We must say… we are coming to be a good opposition.” He encouraged the government to continue with its programs while ensuring that any discrepancies with their policies are addressed openly to the public.
In a notable development, several former politicians joined the Mawbima Janata Party during the same event. Former Ministers Roshan Ranasinghe, Channa Jayasumana, and Milan Jayathilaka all transitioned to Jayaweera’s party, with Ranasinghe being appointed as the party’s chairman and Jayasumana taking on the role of vice president. Additionally, Rajitha Hapuarachchi, a former member of the Western Provincial Council, was appointed as the organizer for the Katana constituency.
This reshuffling within the Mawbima Janata Party underscores its commitment to positioning itself as a significant player in Sri Lanka’s political landscape, ready to support the government while holding it accountable.
