Porsche, the name synonymous with luxury and class, found itself at the center of online mockery after former beauty queen and Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake complained about the “poor state” of her government-assigned Porsche SUV. The prestigious brand’s reputation took a hit as Senanayake, now an advisor to President Ranil Wickremesinghe, aired her grievances during a media briefing, describing the vehicle as “old, damaged, leaking water,” and unfit for official use.
The saga began when the new National People’s Power (NPP) regime decided to retract over 100 government-issued vehicles, including the Porsche assigned to Senanayake. When the list of returned luxury vehicles went public, social media erupted with criticism over the misuse of public funds, with Senanayake quickly becoming the focal point for accepting such a high-end vehicle simply to serve as the President’s advisor.
Adding fuel to the fire, Senanayake revealed that the vehicle, imported between 2010 and 2011, had stalled, forcing her to catch a tuk-tuk to make it to a meeting on time. She further complained that the boot wouldn’t even open, questioning who had been responsible for bringing the car into the country. These remarks, intended to defend her position, only intensified the backlash.
Porsche, a brand usually revered on social media, soon found its pages flooded with sarcastic comments and trolling, with many poking fun at Senanayake’s complaints. Known for her past gaffes, including a multimillion-rupee toilet renovation and a much-ridiculed press conference where she stumbled over figures in the vernacular, this latest episode has only added to the long list of jokes at her expense.
