Colombo, October 3, 2024 – The tourism sector in Sri Lanka has suffered a significant setback, with nearly $100 million lost in the last two months, according to Mr. Priyantha Fernando, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.
Fernando attributed this financial loss to the recent cancellation of the electronic travel permit system, which has deterred potential visitors. “Due to this system’s cancellation, approximately 70,000 tourists who planned to visit Sri Lanka have chosen to stay away,” he explained.
This decline in tourist arrivals is particularly concerning for a country that relies heavily on tourism for its economic stability. Fernando emphasized the urgency of reinstating a more accessible travel permit system to restore confidence among international travelers and revitalize the tourism sector.
The impact of this loss extends beyond immediate revenue, as it also affects local businesses, employment opportunities, and the overall economy. With the tourism industry being a crucial component of Sri Lanka’s recovery, stakeholders are urging the government to take swift action to mitigate the fallout from these recent changes.
