Colombo, October 3, 2024 – In a recent meeting with ministry officials, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressed his unwavering support for public servants dedicated to fostering an efficient and populist public service. This discussion marked his first official engagement after assuming office as the Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Livestock, Irrigation, Fisheries, and Aquatic Resources.
“The role of the Ministry of Agriculture in eradicating rural poverty is immense, and the performance of government officials is crucial in achieving this goal,” President Dissanayake stated, emphasizing the significant impact public servants have on the nation’s future. He affirmed that those working diligently for the citizens would no longer have to endure traditional political reprisals that have plagued the system in the past.
Highlighting the importance of commitment among current public servants, the President remarked, “An effective and efficient public service is essential to meet the needs of our citizens.” He also pointed out that the next 40 days would serve as a transitional period during which public servants must work diligently to maintain service continuity.
In a notable departure from past practices, President Dissanayake assured that he would not publicly question officials, a tactic often used by previous leaders. “I refuse to engage in media shows that undermine the dignity of public servants,” he asserted, indicating his intention to foster a more respectful and productive relationship with government officials.
The President hinted at the potential for new ministerial appointments following the upcoming general election, reinforcing his commitment to reshaping the governance landscape. His message signals a new era of respect and collaboration between the government and public servants, aiming to restore confidence and effectiveness within the public service sector.
