The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has issued a sharp response to comments made by National People’s Force member K.D. Lalkantha, who criticized Sajith Premadasa for being a “nominal opposition leader.” In a statement released on October 4 by Gishan Wijesundara, the press secretary for Sajith Premadasa, the party rejected Lalkantha’s claims, emphasizing that Premadasa’s work as the Leader of the Opposition has positively impacted every citizen in the country.
In his remarks on October 3, Lalkantha alleged that Sajith Premadasa had not played an active role as an opposition leader, suggesting his contributions were largely symbolic. Responding to these claims, Wijesundara emphasized that Premadasa’s efforts have brought tangible benefits to Sri Lanka, affecting “every one of the 22 million citizens, from the newborn to the unborn child.”
The SJB strongly rejected the notion that Premadasa had been ineffective, asserting that his leadership in the opposition had contributed to various reforms and public welfare measures that people continue to benefit from today. The party’s statement highlighted Premadasa’s dedication to the people, countering Lalkantha’s suggestion that his role had been superficial.
While Lalkantha’s comments sparked this exchange, the SJB appears resolute in defending its leader’s contributions to Sri Lankan politics.
