President Anura Kumara Dissanayake visited the Sangha headquarters of the Sri Lanka Ramagna Maha Nikaya in Narahenpita today, where he received blessings from His Holiness Makulawe Wimala Nayaka, the Mahanayaka Aggamaha Pandita. Following the ceremonial visit, the President engaged in discussions with the Maha Sangha, focusing on the current economic, social, and political landscape of the country.
During the discussions, President Dissanayake emphasized his commitment to making decisions in accordance with his manifesto, indicating that he aims to implement related reforms after the upcoming general election. He acknowledged the Maha Sangha’s request for the appointment of qualified and responsible individuals as ambassadors and governors, urging that political affiliations should not overshadow the selection process.
The President also attended a session with the Amarapura Maha Nikaya in Wellawatta, where he met with Most Venerable Karagoda Uyangoda Maithrimurthi Maha Nayaka. The Mahanayake underscored the importance of efficiently utilizing the country’s resources to build a strong, independent Sri Lanka.
In light of recent defamation campaigns against the President during the last election, the Maha Sangharatna advised him to remain vigilant against similar efforts in the future. Dissanayake acknowledged the need for a transformation in the traditional political system, reflecting on the outcomes of the recent presidential election.
The Maha Sangharatna also inquired about the possibility of a new constitution, to which the President responded affirmatively, stating that he plans to pursue constitutional reform following comprehensive discussions and a referendum. He criticized previous governments for making amendments without public consensus, expressing his intent to stabilize the country and craft a constitutional amendment that aligns with the people’s expectations.
