Palani Digambaram, Deputy Leader of the Tamil Progressive Alliance, expressed confidence that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) will secure a significant victory and form a new government in the upcoming general election. Speaking to the media after an election campaign event in Hatton on the 6th, Digambaram emphasized that while the National People’s Force may have garnered majority support in the presidential election, this would not be the case in the general election.
He further criticized trade union leaders attempting to return to Parliament under different symbols, claiming that the people, especially in plantation areas, have rejected these leaders. Digambaram also mentioned that several former MPs and presidents involved in corruption scandals have either retired from politics or chosen not to contest the election.
Highlighting his own principles, Digambaram noted that he has never taken full advantage of the perks given to parliamentarians and intends to continue this practice in the next Parliament.
Lastly, he expressed optimism about President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s ability to uplift the plantation community, given his previous advocacy for improving their infrastructure while in the opposition. Now, as president, Digambaram believes Dissanayake can truly deliver on these promises.
