Sanath Jayasuriya, the newly appointed head coach of Sri Lanka Cricket, has expressed his firm commitment to the team and the nation, emphasizing that his approach will be free of favoritism. In a press conference held on October 7, Jayasuriya articulated his vision for Sri Lankan cricket and outlined his plans for the upcoming challenges.
During the press conference, Jayasuriya highlighted the benefits of having a local coach at the helm. He stated, “It is easy to share ideas with the players. If the players have shortcomings, there is no obstacle to talk to me. You have to have that self-confidence.” His extensive experience as a former cricketer and his understanding of the local cricketing culture will allow for more effective communication and collaboration with the players.
Jayasuriya reassured fans that he would prioritize building a cohesive team rather than playing favorites. “As a local coach, I don’t have favorites. I want to play for the best team. This is a big challenge for me. There is a responsibility on that side,” he affirmed.
Responding to questions about the performance gaps between Sri Lanka’s ODI and T20 teams and the Test squad, Jayasuriya recognized that many players in the Test team also participate in ODIs and T20Is. He stated, “They know how to change the style of play. I and my other coaches talk to the players and bring it there.” He noted that despite some recent slumps in ODIs and T20 matches, he believes there is potential for improvement, especially following a series of Test matches that help hone players’ skills.
Concerns regarding potential disputes over Jayasuriya’s contract were addressed by Sri Lanka Cricket’s Chief Executive Officer, Ashley De Silva. He clarified, “There is nothing like that. Sanath came and usually he is not a person who gives priority to money. Sanath accepted our invitation.” De Silva explained that the contract formalization process typically takes a week or two but insisted there were no disagreements during that time.
As he looks ahead, Jayasuriya outlined his short-term plans, particularly focusing on the upcoming Southeast competition tour, which he deemed crucial. He is keen on ensuring players are fully committed and accountable for their responsibilities on the field. Additionally, he expressed a desire to integrate young talent into the squad, which he believes is essential for sustaining the future of Sri Lankan cricket.
With the 2026 T20 World Cup on the horizon, co-hosted by Sri Lanka and India, Jayasuriya emphasized the importance of thorough preparations. “The upcoming tour of B.E. Kedev is very important. At this time, I am looking more to see if the players fulfill the responsibility given to us 100 percent,” he stated. His strategic vision includes identifying players for the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team and implementing necessary changes to ensure a strong performance in future competitions.
Discussing the challenges posed by the World Test Championship, Jayasuriya pointed to the significance of the four upcoming matches, two of which are in South Africa. He conveyed his confidence, stating, “I think we need to win at least three matches. My kids are very excited to do that.” Highlighting the favorable conditions for play in Durban and Port Elizabeth, he expressed optimism about the team’s chances for success.
With his wealth of experience and a clear vision for the future, Sanath Jayasuriya is poised to lead Sri Lanka Cricket into a new era. His emphasis on fairness, transparency, and teamwork reflects his commitment to elevating the standard of cricket in the country. As he embarks on this new journey, cricket enthusiasts are hopeful that his leadership will foster a strong and united Sri Lankan team ready to take on the world stage.
