The Inland Revenue Department has announced its commitment to rigorously enforce tax collection measures in an effort to recover outstanding taxes by the end of the year. Deputy Commissioner General N.M.N.S.B. Dissanayake, speaking to the media, stated that the department will utilize all available legal avenues to pursue tax defaulters. This includes freezing bank accounts and seizing properties if taxes remain unpaid.
Dissanayake advised the public to exercise caution when dealing with officials visiting their premises for tax collection. He emphasized that these officials must be properly identified by their department ID cards. Additionally, they are not authorized to accept tax payments in cash or by check. Instead, taxpayers should be directed to make payments through official channels linked to the Commissioner General of Revenue’s account.
“Our officers will begin visiting premises to collect outstanding taxes. We advise everyone to verify the identity of these officers. They will never accept checks or cash,” Dissanayake warned. He further stressed the department’s authority to take maximum measures under the law to recover all outstanding taxes by the end of this year.
The Inland Revenue Department has also reassured the public that it will be thorough in its efforts, ensuring that all legal protocols are followed to recover unpaid taxes, and urged taxpayers to settle any dues promptly to avoid further penalties.
