Cabinet Spokesman Minister Vijitha Herath further explained that while President Anura Kumara Dissanayake of the National People’s Power (NPP) is working hard to fulfill the promises made during the presidential campaign, there are limitations in what can be achieved without a supportive government in place. He stated that the manifesto presented to the people requires a broader political framework and cooperation from all sectors of governance to be fully implemented.
Herath noted that the current government structure, which includes opposition parties and other political factions, creates challenges in implementing the NPP’s policies. He stressed that the NPP’s vision goes beyond just the presidency and requires a unified effort with a government that shares the same values and goals.
He also called on the public to understand the difference between having a president from the NPP and having a full government led by the NPP. He reiterated that without parliamentary and ministerial support, many of the structural changes and reforms outlined in their campaign would face significant hurdles.
During the press conference, he emphasized that the National People’s Force will work to build momentum for a future election, aiming to secure a majority in parliament. This, he said, would allow the NPP to form a government that can carry out its full agenda, aligning with the President’s vision for the country. The NPP remains committed to pushing for reforms that address economic, social, and political challenges, and Herath believes that only a new NPP government will be able to achieve these goals.
The comments underscore the difficulties faced by the President in delivering promises without the backing of a parliamentary majority, reflecting the broader challenges of political governance in Sri Lanka.
