Former Member of Parliament, Ranjan Ramanayake, has announced his decision to part ways with the Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) and is preparing to contest the upcoming general election under a new political banner. However, his candidacy hinges on receiving a full presidential pardon, which he hopes will be granted by President Anura Dissanayake.
Ramanayake, who was imprisoned on contempt of court charges, had previously received a partial pardon from former President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Despite his release, this pardon did not restore his eligibility to contest in elections, leaving him barred from running for office.
In a statement, Ramanayake mentioned that he has appealed to the current president for a full pardon that would restore his political rights. He expressed his eagerness to return to active politics and stated his readiness to contest in the next general election, provided the president grants the necessary approval.
Ramanayake’s move marks a significant shift in his political journey, as he had been a vocal and active member of the SJB. His departure and potential candidacy under a new party could reshape the dynamics of the forthcoming elections.
The political community now waits to see whether President Dissanayake will grant the pardon that could pave the way for Ramanayake’s return to parliamentary politics.
