Indian business magnate Ratan Tata, who led the Tata Group for over two decades, passed away at the age of 86, as confirmed by the conglomerate. Tata was recognized globally as one of India’s most influential business leaders, having transformed the Tata Group into a global powerhouse with over $100 billion in annual revenues.
In a statement, Tata Sons Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran expressed his condolences, praising Tata as a “truly uncommon leader” whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Chandrasekaran highlighted Tata’s ability to uphold strong values in both business and leadership.
Tata’s tenure saw landmark acquisitions, including Corus, Jaguar Land Rover, and Tetley, further solidifying the group’s international presence. UK Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds lauded Tata as a “titan of the business world” for his contributions to British industry.
Throughout his career, Tata remained a figure of humility. Despite owning less than 1% of the group, he was recognized as one of India’s most powerful businessmen. In 2012, he retired as chairman and assumed the title of chairman emeritus of Tata Sons.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Tata, calling him a “visionary business leader” who was compassionate and deeply human. Modi reflected on their numerous interactions and expressed sorrow over Tata’s passing.
Born in 1937 to a traditional Parsi family, Tata studied in the U.S. and joined Tata Industries in 1962. He held several key roles before becoming chairman in 1991, following the legendary JRD Tata. Under his leadership, the Tata Group expanded globally, and Tata himself was honored with the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, one of India’s highest civilian honors.
Despite his corporate achievements, Tata maintained a private and modest lifestyle. Known for his love of fast cars, planes, and scuba diving, he was also an ardent dog lover. In 2022, a viral video captured him traveling in a Tata Nano, reflecting his simplicity and connection to the company’s roots.
Tata’s legacy endures as a testament to his vision, integrity, and dedication to both business and humanity.
