In a recent announcement, Cabinet Media Spokesperson Minister Vijitha Herath confirmed that Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will not be attending the upcoming BRICS summit, despite having received an official invitation. The decision stems from the election period and ongoing domestic priorities, which require the President’s focus. However, Sri Lanka will still have representation at the summit through a delegation of senior officials led by Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Aruni Wijewardena.
The BRICS summit, set to take place in Kazan, Russia on October 22, 2024, brings together some of the world’s major emerging economies, including Russia, China, India, Brazil, and South Africa. Recent members such as the UAE, Egypt, and Ethiopia have also joined the bloc. BRICS plays a crucial role in shaping global economic and geopolitical discussions, with its members collectively accounting for a substantial share of global economic output.
Sri Lanka is not yet a member of BRICS, but it has expressed a strong desire to join the influential group. Minister Herath revealed that Sri Lanka had already approached Indian Foreign Minister Subramaniam Jaishankar during his recent visit, requesting India’s support in securing membership. Sri Lanka has also reached out to other member states to garner backing for its bid.
This move signals Sri Lanka’s intent to strengthen its economic and diplomatic ties with BRICS nations, seeking access to broader investment opportunities and economic collaboration. While the President’s absence is notable, the participation of key officials underscores Sri Lanka’s commitment to furthering these discussions and pursuing its membership goals in the future.
The 16th BRICS summit will address crucial issues ranging from economic cooperation to global political dynamics, making it a pivotal event for countries aiming to align with the interests of emerging economies. Sri Lanka’s participation as an observer marks a key step in its efforts to deepen engagement with the bloc.
