Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya emphasized the responsibility of government officials to ensure that development projects benefit the public and are appropriate for the country’s needs. In a meeting with senior officials from the Ministry of Public Administration and other related bodies, the Prime Minister highlighted the need for careful consideration and dialogue before implementing projects, especially those funded through loans.
She stressed that government officials must collaborate closely with relevant stakeholders, drawing on their expertise to conduct development work under favorable conditions. Since many projects are financed through loans that ultimately burden the public, officials need to assess the suitability of these projects and prioritize public welfare.
Furthermore, Dr. Amarasuriya stated that from 2025 onwards, the government aims to make Independence Day celebrations more inclusive, moving away from elitist traditions to involve ordinary citizens and students. She also called for ministerial quarters to be returned promptly after the abolition of ministries, urging officials to take legal action if necessary.
The Prime Minister addressed concerns about a land transfer to Sirimavo Bandaranaike College. She noted that while the transfer was approved by the Cabinet in 1994, it had been delayed due to the presence of a minister’s quarters on part of the land. She instructed officials to expedite the process to complete the transfer to the school.
