Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya announced that from 2025, Sri Lanka’s National Independence Day celebrations will shift focus away from the elite and prioritize the participation and involvement of the general public. She made this statement during a discussion with senior officials at the Ministry of State Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, and Local Government.
Amarasuriya emphasized that past Independence Day celebrations have catered mainly to the country’s elite, but the government aims to make future festivities more inclusive, reflecting the interests and participation of ordinary citizens. She highlighted that the new approach would ensure that school children and the general public are not inconvenienced by the celebrations, signaling a move towards a more accessible and people-centered event.
