Former Member of Parliament Anura Kumara Dissanayake, along with Saman Ratnapriya, has raised concerns over the government’s rapid borrowing. Since taking office, the President has reportedly overseen the acquisition of Rs. 539 billion in loans within two weeks, primarily through the issuance of treasury bills and bonds.
Speaking at a press conference in Colombo, Dissanayake criticized the government’s financial management, accusing it of failing to deliver on previous promises. He argued that the administration’s various initiatives since coming to power have yielded no significant results and suggested that the government is struggling to even appoint officials to key ministries and institutions.
The rapid borrowing has sparked fears about the country’s economic future, with critics questioning the sustainability of such fiscal policies and the impact on national debt levels if this trend continues.
