The Mumbai Indians have announced the reappointment of Mahela Jayawardene as their head coach ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Jayawardene, who previously led the team to three IPL titles during his tenure as head coach from 2017 to 2022, returns to the role after serving as the franchise’s global head of cricket for the last two years.
The decision comes after a challenging period under former South African wicketkeeper Mark Boucher, who took over as head coach when Jayawardene moved into the global role. The Mumbai Indians finished in the last place in the 2024 IPL season and managed a fourth-place finish in 2023, prompting the franchise to bring back Jayawardene to reinvigorate the team.
Mumbai Indians co-owner Akash Ambani expressed his excitement over Jayawardene’s return, emphasizing his leadership and cricketing expertise. “We are thrilled to have Mahela back as the head coach of Mumbai Indians. With our global teams having found their footing within their ecosystems, the opportunity to bring him back to MI arose. His leadership, knowledge, and passion for the game have always benefited MI,” said Ambani.
He also took the opportunity to thank Boucher for his efforts during the last two seasons, acknowledging his dedication and contribution to the team. Under Boucher’s leadership, the franchise saw some struggles but also laid a foundation for the team’s future.
Jayawardene, 47, is widely regarded as one of the most successful coaches in the T20 league format and has built a strong legacy with the Mumbai Indians. His return aims to restore the team’s dominance and guide them toward reclaiming their place as one of the most successful franchises in IPL history.
The Mumbai Indians will look to leverage Jayawardene’s tactical acumen and deep knowledge of the game as they prepare for the 2025 season, hoping to add to their record five IPL championships.
