In a recent meeting with candidates of the National People’s Force in Talavathugoda, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced that a prominent political leader from the North has expressed a willingness to collaborate with his party following the upcoming general election.
Dissanayake emphasized the importance of acquiring strong political power during this transitional phase to facilitate decisive actions and policies. He highlighted historical examples, citing how Mahinda Rajapaksa secured a two-thirds majority in Parliament in 2010 but was defeated five years later. Similarly, he noted that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa lost significant political ground within two and a half years after obtaining a two-thirds majority in 2020, leading to his resignation.
“The strength of political power is not solely defined by the number of seats in Parliament,” Dissanayake stated. He revealed that the unnamed leader from the North conveyed that their group is keen to collaborate with the National People’s Force and that the people of the North are ready to support their initiative if they do not align with the party.
This development could signify a strategic shift in the political landscape ahead of the elections, as Dissanayake aims to solidify his party’s influence and reach across diverse regions of the country.
