During a press conference today (14), former opposition leader Sajith Premadasa revealed his intention to step down from his position. He expressed confidence in the party’s recent achievements and outlined their vision for the future. “We have successfully handed over nominations across all 22 districts of the island. This marks the start of our election campaign, aimed at revitalizing local politics,” he stated. Premadasa reflected on the challenges faced by local politicians, attributing their struggles to the “selfish political policies and corrupt practices” of past leaders, which he believes have tarnished public trust.
In response to questions about his future role and whether he would seek to reclaim the position of opposition leader, fellow party member Dilith remarked, “I think the time has come for him to retire. There has been a situation of belief within his party as well. We wish him the best of luck in his retirement. Our objective is to foster an enlightened and courageous opposition that centers on our universal power.” Dilith emphasized the need for a robust opposition that can effectively represent the people’s interests and offer constructive alternatives to current governance, noting, “The people of this country deserve a leadership that is not only informed but also willing to challenge the status quo.”
The conference also highlighted the recent influx of local politicians joining Sarvajana Power. Several notable figures from the Gampaha district, including former presidents and vice presidents of local councils, publicly endorsed the party’s platform. Among them were Priyantha Pushpakumara, the former president of the Attanagalla Local Council; Sarath Nandasiri Ranatunga, the former president of the Mirigama Local Council; Calum Thushara, the former vice president of the Biagama Local Council; Lanka Vijitha Kumara, the former vice president of the Kelaniya Local Council; and Thushara Ashoka Kumara, a former member of the Kelaniya Local Council.
Additionally, Anjana Srinath, a former member of the Gampaha Local Council, has been appointed as the Gampaha district organizer for Sarvajana Power. Entrepreneur Jayantha Athapatthu has also taken on the role of Gampaha district chief organizer, signaling a strong organizational structure as the party prepares for the upcoming general election. This strategic alignment within Sarvajana Power aims to consolidate support and ensure a unified front in the electoral battle, focusing on representing the interests of the people and addressing the pressing issues facing the country.
