The industrial production index in Sri Lanka has reported a growth of 1.2% in August 2024 compared to the same month last year. According to the Census and Statistics Department, the index rose from 90.2 in August 2023 to 91.3 in August 2024, reflecting positive trends in certain sectors.
Notably, there has been a significant increase in food production, contributing to the overall growth in industrial output. However, the Census and Statistics Department also highlighted a decline in the production of beverages and tobacco-related products during the same period.
In a related development, the official poverty line in the country saw a slight decrease from July to August. The poverty line, which stood at 16,373 rupees in July, fell to 16,152 rupees in August. This change indicates a reduction in poverty levels when compared to the previous month, although it still reflects an increase compared to August 2023.
