Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Vijitha Herath addressed the issue of public sector salary increases during a press conference held today in Colombo. When asked about a potential salary hike for government employees, he explained that any decision would be contingent upon the state of the nation’s financial health.
Minister Herath emphasized that while there is demand for a salary increase, the government must carefully consider the broader economic situation before making any commitments. He noted that managing the country’s finances in the current climate requires a balanced approach, where public sector needs are weighed against the overall economic challenges.
The minister further clarified that, given the limited time left this year, a full budget for 2025 will not be tabled. Instead, the government plans to present an interim budget for the first quarter of the next year. This interim financial plan will lay the groundwork for the upcoming months and guide any immediate economic measures, including potential salary adjustments for government workers.
He assured that the government is aware of the financial difficulties faced by public servants and would make efforts to address their concerns while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
