Manjula Suravirarachchi, the Nuwara Eliya district group leader of the National People’s Power (NPP), announced a significant shift in the political dynamics of the region, traditionally seen as a stronghold for political figures like Ranil Wickremesinghe and Sajith Premadasa. During a press conference held at a private function hall in Hatton, Suravirarachchi expressed confidence that the upcoming 2024 general elections will mark a turning point for the NPF in Nuwara Eliya.
Suravirarachchi highlighted that the NPP had garnered a substantial percentage of votes during the presidential election, particularly after Anura Kumara Dissanayake was appointed as the president. He noted an increasing trend of support from plantation workers and residents of Nuwara Eliya, indicating that they are rallying around the NPF’s platform.
Suravirarachchi also pointed out that key political figures from the area, including the late Thondaman and Digambaran, have historically influenced the electoral landscape. He mentioned that many who were previously active in local politics are now engaging in negotiations with NPP candidates in the district. This includes notable personalities who are reportedly ready to collaborate without conditions, reflecting a shift in political allegiance.
The NPF aims to secure five parliamentary seats from Nuwara Eliya in the upcoming elections. Suravirarachchi emphasized that the party will conduct its election campaigns with unwavering dedication and commitment, mobilizing support among the electorate.
The press conference also featured contributions from several influential figures, including social activist Krishnan Kaleichelvi, lawyer Anushka Darshani Thilakaratne, Dr. Arumugam Jeyarajan, and social activist Danien Noel Genester, who reinforced the NPP’s message of change and progress for the people of Nuwara Eliya.
As the 2024 general elections approach, the NPP is positioning itself as a viable alternative, aiming to capitalize on the changing political sentiment within the district.
