ICC CWC 2023 – Game 8 (SL vs PAK) – Pakistan in record Word Cup run chase
Pakistan successfully chased down a hefty total of 345 runs to beat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets. Mohamed Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique both claimed centuries to leave Sri Lanka stunned at the end of the encounter, having recovered from an early batting collapse and a tiring day in the field.
The Sri Lankans had an almost perfect start to their game. Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama batted exceptionally well to put Sri Lanka in a strong position. Mendis clobbered a quick 77 ball 122, while Samarawickrama held on almost till the end of the first innings to post a maiden 108 himself.
The pair helped Sri Lanka score 344 for 9 wickets but Pakistan were not out of the game, just yet. They opened the second innings with confidence and intent, carefully chipping away at the required runs.
The chase was anything but easy for the Pakistanis. Losing opener Imam Ul Haq early in the powerplay and then skipper Babar Azam three overs later was not easy to digest. However, thanks to the experience of Mohamed Rizwan and the patience of Abdulla Shafique, Pakistan were able to capitalise on the right bowlers and turn the tables in their favor.
Rizwan and Shafique held on for a timely 176 run third wicket partnership, steadily but surely, keeping their eyes on the prize. Even after the loss of his partner Shaffique in the 33rd over for a well deserved 113, Rizwan continued to batter the Sri Lankan bowlers with ease. His timing was impressive to say the least and eventually his gusto steered Pakistan to victory with10 balls remaining. Rizwan was rightfully awarded the man of the match for his explosive performance and ended his stint at the crease with an important win and 131 not out.
This win puts Pakistan in a strong position to qualify for the Semi Finals alongside New Zealand who sit at Number 1 on the Group Table. Pakistan’s performance was just a testament as to how far this cricket fanatic nation world go for ultimate glory. Sri Lanka on the other hand look like they might have to come to terms with an early exit, unless they get their acts together before it’s too late.
