GALLE – Manusha Nanayakkara, a Galle district candidate from the New Democratic Front, has criticized Sajith Premadasa, leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) party, for his recent political strategy. In a media briefing held in Galle, Nanayakkara accused Premadasa of resisting efforts to form a government while also opposing the establishment of a strong opposition, a stance that Nanayakkara claims has weakened Sri Lanka’s democratic process.
According to Nanayakkara, Premadasa’s unwillingness to pursue a coalition government or support the formation of a robust opposition resulted in a missed opportunity for the country’s political landscape. “At a time like this, when the country is in need of decisive leadership, the SJB’s approach under Mr. Premadasa has left a vacuum in governance,” he stated.
Nanayakkara emphasized the need for unity among political parties to safeguard democracy, arguing that the current situation demands a well-organized opposition to hold the government accountable. He stated, “This is the time for all parties to set aside differences and work together for the good of the country.”
The remarks point to growing tensions within the opposition bloc regarding the direction and role of political leadership in Sri Lanka. With an increasing call for collaboration, Premadasa’s approach has come under scrutiny, especially as the country grapples with economic and political challenges. Critics argue that a failure to either form a government or consolidate a strong opposition could lead to further instability.
Premadasa’s position on these matters has not been officially clarified, but his party’s actions have raised questions about the future direction of Sri Lankan politics. Observers suggest that the criticism reflects broader discontent among opposition factions over strategies to navigate the country’s current crisis.
