COLOMBO – The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) organization has recommended that candidates running in the upcoming general election appoint a designated person to manage their income and expenditure records. Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi emphasized the importance of this step to avoid the difficulties faced by some candidates during the last presidential election when submitting financial reports.
Adding to the discussion, Manjula Gajanayake, Executive Director of the Institute for Democracy, Reform, and Election Studies, highlighted the consequences for candidates who fail to properly report their campaign finances. He warned that candidates who submit inaccurate information or fail to provide their expense reports may face legal repercussions, including the potential loss of political rights for three years or the risk of losing their elected position through an election petition.
These warnings serve as a reminder to all candidates about the significance of maintaining accurate financial records to ensure compliance with election regulations and avoid legal complications.
