Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has criticized two reports presented by a committee appointed by the previous government to investigate the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks. According to the archbishop, the reports largely mirrored the recommendations made by the original Presidential Commission but added two new recommendations aimed at punishing two top officials currently serving in the government.
Cardinal Ranjith alleged that the reports were prepared to serve the political interests of each government in power rather than uncover the truth behind the attacks that killed over 250 people. He expressed his concerns about the integrity of the investigations, stating that politically driven inquiries were unacceptable and undermined the search for justice for the victims and their families.
The archbishop further emphasized the need for an impartial and comprehensive investigation under the current administration led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. He stated that he was closely monitoring the government’s actions regarding the case and called for a fair and transparent approach to bring those responsible for the tragedy to justice.
The Easter Sunday attacks, which targeted churches and hotels across Sri Lanka, remain a deeply sensitive issue in the country, with many still seeking answers and accountability. The archbishop’s remarks reflect ongoing concerns about the politicization of the investigations and the pursuit of justice for the victims.
