President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has launched a determined effort to address the unresolved issues surrounding the 2019 Easter bombings, assuring the public that his administration is fully committed to uncovering the truth. Speaking passionately at a campaign rally in Katunayake, he criticized the use of the tragic attack as a political tool and denounced attempts by some factions to manipulate public sentiment by demanding reports without offering genuine solutions.
He pointed out that the reports generated during Ranil Wickremesinghe’s administration were not genuine investigative documents, but rather politically influenced attempts to manage the situation. The President argued that these reports were neither comprehensive nor conclusive and suggested that their purpose was more about political maneuvering than finding justice for the victims.
Dissanayake accused certain individuals of reviving the issue now to create unrest, asserting that they had “woken up” five years later to stir controversy. He suggested that these individuals were not genuinely interested in finding the real culprits behind the attack but were instead focused on using the event to regain political power. The President dismissed the notion that the reports should be considered confidential, explaining that they had already been forwarded to appropriate institutions and stressing that his administration had nothing to hide.
He claimed that past efforts had deliberately obstructed a thorough investigation by creating committees that were designed to stifle the truth rather than uncover it. To rectify this, he stated that the government had taken concrete steps to empower the police department, making it more capable of handling a full-scale investigation. He confirmed that directives had been given to both the Secret Police and the Inspector General of Police to pursue a formal investigation into the Easter attack.
The President assured the audience that his government would not be “caught in the tipping buckets” of misinformation or political gamesmanship, and would remain steadfast in its mission to deliver justice. He reaffirmed the National People’s Power’s commitment to an impartial investigation, emphasizing that there would be no cover-ups or protection of individuals involved. “We are dedicated to exposing the truth, not protecting those responsible. Our goal is a transparent investigation that serves justice, without being swayed by political motivations,” Dissanayake declared, promising to uphold the integrity of the investigation.
