In a significant operation, the Kandy Division Criminal Investigation Bureau has seized two luxury vehicles—a BMW and a Prado jeep—worth approximately Rs. 60 million from the residence of former Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena’s son-in-law in Aniwatta, Kandy.
The operation was initiated based on intelligence received by the Senior Superintendent of Police overseeing the Kandy Division. Upon arrival, officers found that no one present at the residence could provide a legal claim to the vehicles, leading to their immediate confiscation.
Sources indicate that the former Minister’s son-in-law, who is also known for operating a car dealership in the Mahaiyawa area, previously held a senior position at the Ports Authority during Rohitha Abeygunawardena’s tenure.
Authorities suspect that the seized vehicles may have been unlawfully released from the port. As part of the ongoing investigation, the vehicles will be sent to the Government Analysts for further examination to determine their origins and the legality of their release.
