Dr. Hans Wijesuriya has announced his decision to join the government in a pivotal role to spearhead the country’s Digital Economy initiatives. He will step down from his current position to work pro bono, reflecting his commitment to national development.
Hans Wijesuriya is the son of the late Mr. P.M.W. Wijesuriya, a highly respected Auditor General known for his integrity and expertise. His father faced challenges during his tenure, particularly under former President J.R. Jayewardene, who reportedly disapproved of his independent reporting. When Mr. Wijesuriya sought unpaid leave for an opportunity with the World Bank or IMF to support his son’s education abroad, he was denied, leading to his premature resignation.
In addition to his current role, Dr. Wijesuriya is a former chairman of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, showcasing his extensive experience in economic matters. His decision to join the government highlights his confidence in the direction of Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s administration and its potential to transform the nation’s economy through digital advancements.
Excellent move by AKD. Dr. Hans’ services will indeed favour the government and the country. However on his side, it is a very bold move by leaving the present job to take this up. A similar act was done by Dr. Samith Perera, who was the Global Director of CBL. It’s like you have climbed on a precarious ladder. We still don’t know which way the winds will flow.
