A vehicle demonstration took place in Maskeliya on October 20, organized by members of the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA), who are contesting the general election from the Nuwara Eliya district under the banner of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya. The demonstration coincided with an election campaign meeting held at the Maskeliya PMD Hall, attended by deputy leaders Palani Digambaram, V. Radhakrishnan, and M. Udayakumar.
As the three candidates arrived at the venue, supporters from the plantation community joined in a festive display, complete with musical groups, celebrating the candidates’ presence. Following the meeting, a vehicle procession was staged through Maskeliya city to further rally support for the TPA.
However, the vehicle demonstration has drawn criticism from local business owners, who assert that it violates election regulations. They expressed frustration that no officials from the Maskeliya police station intervened to halt the demonstration, despite its apparent breach of election laws.
The incident has raised questions about law enforcement’s role in monitoring election-related activities, as tensions mount in the lead-up to the general election. Local authorities are urged to clarify the regulations surrounding such demonstrations to ensure a fair electoral process.
