Political activist and actress Damitha Abeyratne has officially left the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) to join the newly formed Democratic National Alliance, citing dissatisfaction with SJB leader Sajith Premadasa’s leadership. Abeyratne claims she was sidelined by the party, leading her to switch allegiances ahead of the upcoming general election.
Abeyratne’s departure follows controversy over her exclusion from the SJB’s candidate list for the Ratnapura district, with her name being dropped on the final day of nominations, October 11. She criticized Premadasa for failing to support her democratic rights, prompting her decision to leave the party.
The Democratic National Alliance, led by Dr. Mohan Perera, launched on October 8 at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel, introducing itself as a political force aiming for “a revolution for a developing country.” The alliance, comprising over ten political parties and civil organizations, will contest the election under the post box symbol. Dr. Perera is running as a national list candidate and has been announced as the alliance’s prime ministerial nominee.
